Momiji

Frequently Asked Questions

We hope to answer most of your queries here but please don't hesitate to contact us for further information.

Where are you located?

Momiji is a cosy six-bedroom family run boutique lodge located in the Hakuba Norikura Onsen resort which itself lies in the north-eastern reaches of Nagano’s Hakuba Valley. We are midway between the Tsugaike and Cortina resorts, the latter being renowned as Asia’s powder snow Mecca.

The locale itself is quiet - more of a private retreat - far from the hustle and bustle of Hakuba central!

Aside from Momiji’s bar and restaurant, more choice can be found in Tsugaike, a short drive away. A plethora of restaurants and bars can be found in Hakuba, just a 15-minute drive away.

The nearest convenience store is also 15-minute drive away as is the nearest international ATM.

Detailed information about getting to Momiji is available in the following files:

We can arrange for you a private pick-up from Nagano station - contact us for availabilitu and pricing

Is the lodge ski-in / ski-out?

The lodge is totally ski-in / ski-out, just a short downhill cruise to the Satomi slope and then onto the lifts to either Norikura or Cortina.

Are meals included?

In the winter season, a full English / continental breakfast is included in all our room rates. Dinner is available nightly at ¥4,500 plus 10% consumption tax per person. Kids' meals are available - please enquire for menu and pricing. We are happy to cater for vegetarians and those with allergies or gluten intolerance (advance notice required). Our restaurant is closed every Wednesday evening when we will be happy to take our guests to local restaurants.

What time is check-in and check-out?

Check-in is 4:00 p.m. and check-out is 10:00 a.m. Early check-in and late check-out are sometimes possible by prior request only.

Where can I hire gear?

For guests staying at Momiji, we recommend Arai Sports in Tsugaike. We can drop you off for a fitting and pick you up

Please note that in Japan, goggles and gloves are available for purchase but not usually available to rent.

Where can I book lessons? What about backcountry?

For English language lessons, please contact Martin at Frontier Snow School who are based in Norikura.

For backcountry guiding, please contact James Robb at Northern Heights Guiding.

Advance booking recommended.

Are lift passes available at Momiji?

Discounted lift passes to the Cortina and Norikura slopes are available. For other resorts, you can pay as you go.

How do I get around?

There is a shuttle bus stop 400 metres away. There are two buses in the morning and two in the afternoon. The buses will take you to Tsugaike, Iwatake and Happo. More resorts are accessible by changing buses at Happo. We can pick guests up from the bus stop upon return in the afternoon, but we ask that you make your way there yourself in the morning.

Taxis are in short supply in the Valley and are expensive, but can be booked for you if done well in advance.

Should I Hire a Car?

It is advisable if you want to move around as there are no amenities in the vicinity and taxis are difficult to book. Please be sure to hire a 4-wheel-drive vehicle with winter tires. Booking early is recommended and an international driving licence is required. Please note that we drive on the left in Japan and most cars have automatic transmission. Parking space is available at Momiji.

Aside from the large national companies such as Nippon and Toyota Rent-A-Car or ORIX, local rentals are available from Windy Car Rental and Freedom Hakuba.

Cars hired locally would normally feature an English language GPS. In winter, all cars are 4WD, fitted with snow tires, and come complete with roof rack. Guests are requested to book directly.

Can I send skis, boards, luggage, etc. in advance?

Yes, certainly. Black Cat (Yamato Takkyubin) offers a reliable and cheap service available at airports or hotels. Please send to our address below, and be sure to add the lead guest’s name and check-in date on the docket. Weather conditions and shipper’s address can affect the arrival date.
